‘Particle’ a reference to something within a whole. Not only a digital reference but also an example of the new Global Society and its interconnectedness. Our project explores society today as being in a state of flux where established values, beliefs and knowledge is being questioned, due partly to this accelerated global society made up of online networks and communities. The accessibility of information and how it is represented and perceived also creates an interesting link between data, it’s shift to information and eventual knowledge.

Using 1’s and 0’s to represent the raw data; we arrange them into a recognisable structure or form giving it relevance and purpose – information. When the structure is placed within a specific context and given meaning for example, a symbol, it is similar to that of information, which is contextualised to provide value, in effect becoming knowledge. The breaking down and rebuilding of the structure during the performance not only creates a digital network between the performers: as one constructs the other deconstructs, it also references the questioning of knowledge and the development of it within our Global Society.

The performance and interactive nature of the work allows the audience to access the work on a sensory level. Using Particle Systems, the technique used to digitally recreate natural phenomenon such as smoke, fire or in this case the movement of the 1’s and 0’s, the work also emphasizes the relevance and subtlety of sensory communication.
